The latest beta version for Android has Passkey support. WhatsApp is thus picking up on a popular trend in the digital world: the ban on passwords.

WABetainfo noticed the feature in the latest Android beta. WhatsApp is looking for new ways to secure your account. The previous beta included support for email addresses, so now WhatsApp wants to add passkeys as well.

The term Passkeys has been mentioned regularly on ITdaily for a few months. A passkey is a series of numbers or characters used in multi-factor authentication. Since you need to confirm your login attempt with fingerprint or face recognition, it is much more secure than the traditional password. In the case of WhatsApp, your passkey is kept safe in the Google password manager.

Make the password redundant

Passkey support is still being tested, but there’s a good chance it will eventually roll out to all users. Google, Microsoft, Apple’s password manager 1Password and Bitwarden as well as Github, among others, are conducting tests with passkeys on their platforms. Passkeys are intended to make the password obsolete at some point. We’re not there yet, but it’s only a matter of time.

What is already officially available in WhatsApp is the ability to share your screen during video calls. Also, recently it has become much easier to send messages to unsaved contacts. Smartphone not at hand? This is also not a problem if you use the Windows app.
