In a video posted on the X social network, developers from UTM show a Windows XP virtual machine that successfully boots and boots up before the user’s eyes. UTM is a QEMU-based system emulator and virtual machine host for iOS and macOS. In other words, it allows users to run Windows, Linux and even macOS on an iPhone, iPad or Mac. And now also in visionOS.

Runs on Windows XP, Vision Pro

According to the developers, while Windows XP successfully emulates in visionOS, they have not yet implemented input support, which means there is no way to interact yet after the virtual machine is started. But developers already do this.

Here’s what it looks like for a headphone user: video

“UTM now works on Vision Pro (simulator)! You still need to implement input devices, but here is a small overview.”

It is worth noting that the VisionOS operating system is based on iPadOS, which UTM developers have long mastered and supported. So it’s no surprise that Vision Pro can emulate Windows XP as well. But seeing it in a virtual floating window is certainly very interesting, albeit absolutely useless.

Unfortunately, you won’t find UTM in the App Store because Apple doesn’t allow apps for virtual machines on iOS. It must be installed using additional download methods (like the AltStore, which lets you bypass some of Apple’s rules without having to jailbreak) or TestFlight.
