The violent death of an 11-year-old girl this Wednesday on the outskirts of Buenos Aires paralyzed the election campaign in Argentina, the country where the primaries will be held next Sunday.

Morena Dominguez was attacked on her way to school and was approached from a motorcycle by two men who wanted to steal her backpack. The girl was dragged across the ground and received a severe blow to the liver, as found in the autopsy, which caused internal bleeding and death at Evita Hospital in Lanus, a city in the province of Buenos Aires.

There are currently seven people in custody and although the minor, under the age of 14, initially confessed to participating in the attack, he later changed his testimony.

Upon learning of the attack, Argentina’s top presidential candidates, who are competing this Sunday for the official nomination, announced the suspension of various proselytizing activities they had planned for this Wednesday and Thursday, coinciding with the close of the campaign.

Former security secretary Patricia Bullrich, who suspended the activities she was preparing for Thursday specifically in Lanus, wrote a message on her Twitter account in which she expressed the “accompaniment and support of family and friends.”

“We cannot continue to live with such pain and fear. It doesn’t work anymore. They have turned Argentina into an uninhabitable country,” concluded the Juntos por el Cambio (centre-right) alliance candidate, who has been harsh and repressive about her fight against crime.

In identical terms, libertarian candidate Javier Miley spoke on the same social network that the “political class” was responsible for the event, which for decades put “victims in the place of criminals, and criminals in place.” victims.”

“We want to end this model of protecting criminals and return to the only model that works: suppressing crime without hesitation. Until murderers, rapists and criminals learn that committing a crime has direct consequences for their entire lives, we will continue to live under this scourge of insecurity,” he added.

Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, who rivals Bullrich in internal opposition, posted in a more moderate tone: “There are no words for such pain. My condolences to Morena’s family and loved ones. We need justice. I’m going to accompany them to claim it.”

The latest to suspend his final campaign was pro-government candidate and economy minister Sergio Massa, who was about to take part in an event in La Plata, the capital of the province of Buenos Aires.

“Given the painful crime of Morena that took place this morning in Lanus, the Unión por la Patria has decided to suspend the closing ceremony of the campaign scheduled for tomorrow at the Teatro Argentino de La Plata. We accompany their relatives and ask for justice,” the official Twitter account of the ruling coalition says.

The one who had already suspended the action today was the governor of the province, also the official Axel Kichillof, who was about to appear in Merlot and who, in a statement by his executive director, explained: “Nothing will restore the life of Morena, except for this terrible crime that drives the whole society, unpunished.”

Argentina celebrates the PASO (Primary, Open, Simultaneous and Compulsory) elections on Sunday, which will produce candidates who will run in the October 22 general election. EFE

At least two videos of those arrested for the attack are circulating on social networks.

In one of them, a detained young man can be seen saying “I’ll kill them all” when he is detained at the police station.

In another, the convicts identify the alleged assailant in prison and threaten him. They call it “matanena”.
