OpenAI has filed patents for GPT-5, the next generation of the AI model behind ChatGPT. This may indicate that a launch is imminent, but it doesn’t have to be.
OpenAI confirmed via LinkedIn that it filed a patent application with the US Patent Office to register GPT-5 on July 18, after rumors had been circulating for several days. The application includes AI functions related to speech and text processing, as well as software for the development of neural networks. The company also writes that it expects to complete GPT-5 training by December.
Does that mean a new (and even better) generation of ChatGPT is on the way? It’s still hard to say. OpenAI is now announcing for the first time that GPT-5 is in the works, after previously denying it. At this stage of the development process, the primary purpose of filing a patent is to prevent competitors from exploiting key technologies.
Even if OpenAI sticks to the proposed schedule, GPT-5 is unlikely to become publicly available this year. OpenAI must first build in the necessary security mechanisms to prevent GPT-5 from crossing ethical boundaries. We’ve already seen a process with the previous generation GPT-4 that needs to be done carefully.
In addition, GPT-4 is still relatively new and has only been available to all ChatGPT users since July. Also, the fact that OpenAI is still rolling out major updates for the current version indicates that there is still a lot of room for improvement with GPT-4. We therefore expect a possible launch of GPT-5 at the beginning of 2024 at the earliest, initially limited to paying users.
OpenAI itself has high expectations for the upcoming model. In the LinkedIn post, the company juggles the term “artificial general intelligence”: AI that has the skills to perform any intellectual task at the same level as a human. There is still much debate among scientists as to whether this breakthrough is possible and, more importantly, desirable, but OpenAI is convinced that GPT-5 will at least come close to it.
