Experts created a system based on ARM Cortex M0 + microprocessors and a bioaccumulator based on a freshwater cyanobacteria Synechocystis species. The computer has been running on algae energy for over six months.
In the lab, an algae-based battery could produce a small amount of energy, the scientists said. The weak electric current from photosynthesis was conducted to the aluminum electrode and used to power the microprocessor.
“We were surprised how well the system worked for a long time – we thought it would stop in a few weeks but it continued to work“- said Dr. Paolo Bombelli, author of the study. According to the scientist, algae do not need food, as they create their own food in the process of photosynthesis. The findings of the study can be used to create stand-alone tools for a smart home.
