Biofire Technologies has raised $17 million in funding to further develop its “smart” pistol, which uses a fingerprint sensor to unlock the trigger.
Biofire weapons can only be used by authorized users, which should prevent unauthorized use of weapons. Biofire CEOs are most concerned with children “protected from accidental gun use”.
“I see gun ownership will remain a part of American culture for the foreseeable future. ” – says the founder and CEO of Biofire Kai Klopfer. “A smart weapon is not a panacea, but we believe we can make an immediate and significant impact. ” .
Klopfer, who left MIT to pursue Biofire, adds that the weapon has undergone beta testing with law enforcement and firearms experts.
