During the study, the scientists evaluated the 200 most popular websites and found that 120 websites still use the CAPTCHA test, which should distinguish computers from people.
They enlisted the help of 1,000 online participants, varying by location, age, gender, and education level, to complete 10 CAPTCHA tests at these sites and rate their level of difficulty.
Researchers have found that many bots described in scientific journals can beat humans in these tests, both for speed and accuracy.
Some CAPTCHA tests require 9 to 15 seconds for humans to solve with around 50% to 84% accuracy, while bots took less than a second to complete them and did it almost perfectly.
“The accuracy of the bots ranges from 85% to 100%, in most cases it’s over 96%. This significantly exceeds the accuracy range we’ve observed in humans (50-85%),” he said.
