The coffin of Ecuadorian candidate Fernando Villavicencio goes to the cemetery

He coffin with the body of Fernando Villavicencio, Ecuadorian presidential candidate killed last Wednesday left in hearse accompanied by family heading to the cemetery north of Quito, where he will be buried this Friday.

The hearse left the funeral home, where it was in the last hours hidden in a family secret by a small group relatives and relatives, and at the door of which on Friday morning many supporters and families gathered, access to which was finally not allowed.

Villavicencio, a journalist and former assemblyman turned nemesis of former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017), was killed last Wednesday afternoon by alleged Colombian hitmen as he left a rally at a school in northern Quito.

Despite the request of supporters and some relatives who requested access to the funerary chapel, the wake for Villavicencio was held entirely in private and the public could not gain access to say goodbye.

Although his relatives offered to pay tribute to Villavicencio posthumously at the exhibition center in the Ecuadorian capital, in the end the coffin was delivered only to the cemetery, where burial was scheduled from early morning for that Friday noon.

From early morning there were disagreements between relatives Villavicencio, as some accused the wife of the deceased, Veronica Zaraus, of preventing them from entering the burning chapel.

Also outside the funeral home there were some tense situations among sympathizers who wanted to enter, which led to some of the police guarding the place using pepper spray.

Villavicencio was one of eight candidates registered as the successor to the current president, Conservative Guillermo Lasso, in a special general election scheduled for next Sunday, 20 August.

The attack also injured nine other people, five of whom are in stable condition at a women’s clinic, according to a statement from the medical center, where Villavicencio also arrived “suddenly” and where they failed to save his life.

For their part, the Ecuadorian authorities arrested six people – all Colombians – on suspicion of being the material authors of the crime, who are in pre-trial detention by court order, but it is still unknown who could have ordered the murder.

According to the same authorities, the seventh person who died after being wounded during a firefight between the attackers and security forces defending Villavicencio was Colombian.
