Maui Airport Main Runway Closed

Before a new death toll was known, the Hawaii Department of Transportation announced the closure of the runway at Maui’s main airport, Kahului.

The goal is to accommodate receiving firefighting assistance as well as They evacuated over 1,400 people.

In a post on the X social network, the authorities said they would close the “shortcut” route to help, which will not affect commercial flights but it would affect “general aviation”.

Nearly 1,500 people are in official shelters.

A total of 1,418 people are in six temporary shelters set up to care for victims of the worst natural disaster the U.S. archipelago has experienced in its history, also according to official figures Friday.
