The Pentagon has created a working group on productive artificial intelligence called Task Force Lima. This was reported by Defense One. The main task of the group will be to determine the level of security during the use of productive artificial intelligence in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Professionals should identify situations where use becomes dangerous.
The group will also explore how other countries can use this type of artificial intelligence to harm the United States.
“A number of use cases will emerge that will become new attack vectors not only for the Department of Defense but also for companies. And we… have to painstakingly figure out how to solve them.“, group manager Craig Martell said.
Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence characterized by the ability to generate sound, text and images based on the materials provided to it. The United States Department of Defense is in no rush to implement AI to make its job easier. It will have to work with huge volumes of data that modern AI can’t cope with and generate inaccurate data.
Experts call such inaccurate and possibly even distorted data “hallucinations.” The State Department plans to use artificial intelligence, for example, to summarize large numbers of documents, draft reports and other documents, or search for a necessary problem. Task Force Lima will help the Pentagon better understand what it needs to achieve its AI goals.
We’re talking about increasing the volume of cloud services, data or synthetic data, models or none of the above. Martell believes that the field of AI is still too young to definitively understand its importance.
Martell pointed out that the broader question is whether the Department of Defense has enough examples of productive AI use and where it can be useful, provided the risks are understood.
Another challenge is the development of an intuitive interface and the rapid generation of specific and understandable answers: modern civilian generative AI requires a large number of correctly constructed queries to obtain all the necessary answers. Other types of AI are already used in the defense industry. Source
