Huawei cannot use 5G technology or Google services due to the US trade ban. As a result, the company has been relying on Qualcomm’s 4G chipsets in recent years. But there are reports that Huawei is working with its domestic chipmaker partner to fix these issues and enable 5G on its devices. The five new Huawei phones have now been certified by the Bluetooth SIG and their IDs indicate they will offer 5G connectivity.
Five new Bluetooth SIG certified devices:
The names of these new Huawei phones are unknown, but they all have the “AN” or “TN” suffix in their model numbers, indicating that they support 5G connectivity. To put this in context, Huawei phones with the suffix “AL” have 4G connectivity. For example, the Huawei Mate 50’s model number is CET-AL00, which means it’s a 4G phone.
Apart from these unnamed devices, the Huawei Nova 13, Nova 14, Nova 15 and Nova 16 series also took part in the Bluetooth SIG certification. These phones will be available in Vanilla, Pro, and Ultra models, and their model numbers indicate that they will also support 5G connectivity.
As previously mentioned, Huawei is said to be working with Chinese chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) to develop 5G chipsets. Specifically, Huawei is said to use the N+1 process of SMIC, which is similar to the 7nm process used by other leading chip manufacturers. Using the SMIC generation node,
Huawei may produce cheaper 5G smartphones for the mass market. This will allow it to increase smartphone sales and gain experience in native technologies for 5G smartphones. The company is reportedly planning to launch its first 5G phones with the new chipset this year, possibly as part of the Mate 60 series.
