The FBI has arrived in Ecuador to investigate the murder of Villavicencio.

A U.S. federal police team has arrived in Ecuador to support police and prosecutorial investigations to establish responsibility for the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, the South American country’s interior minister said on Sunday.

Villavicencio, a former congressman and former corruption investigative journalist, was shot at as he left a campaign event on Wednesday night. Six people have been arrested in the case so far.

“The FBI commission is already in the country, it has contacted the national police, in the coming hours there will be a trilateral meeting with the attorney general’s office, which is the head of the investigation, to determine the extent of cooperation and support,” Interior Minister Juan Zapata told reporters.

The official stressed the arrest of the alleged perpetrators, but assured that they would deepen the investigation to catch other individuals involved.

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso announced this week on the X social network, formerly known as Twitter, that he has requested the support of the US Federal Police (FBI, English acronym) in investigating the assassination of a presidential candidate.

Lasso said the agency had accepted the request and that the mission would arrive in the next few hours, without providing any details.

For his part, Alain Luna, director of investigations for the Ecuadorian police, said that support had been requested from Interpol Colombia to provide dossiers of the detainees.

The prosecution does not rule out seeking international assistance in the investigation.

Quito Police said this week that one suspect killed and six others arrested for killing a candidate are Colombians, while wanted “intellectual authors” of the murder.

The suspect, who died from injuries sustained in the shootout, was previously arrested on weapons charges, the government said on Thursday, and the Colombians detained belong to organized crime groups.

Villavicencio died of a traumatic brain injury, hemorrhage, and a brain rupture caused by the bullet, according to the autopsy results listed in the indictment documents. He also suffered a skull fracture.

Violence in Ecuador, which will hold presidential elections on August 20, has increased in recent years, especially in cities along drug routes such as Guayaquil and Esmeraldas (Reuters).
