Sony Interactive Entertainment has registered a new PlayStation 5 model in Japan. The company received a certificate for the console with model number CFI-1200 with updated radio equipment. The original PS5 uses the CFI-1XXX numbering scheme, and the 2021 version uses the CFI-11XX scheme.

The product is certified by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan, which ensures that radio and wireless communication equipment comply with certain technical standards.

In May last year, it was announced that Sony will begin production of an updated PS5 console in 2022. It will use a “new semi-individualized” 6 nm processor from AMD (the original processor was built with 7 nm process technology). Taiwan’s commercial website DigiTimes said that suppliers, including the TSMC semiconductor plant, are planning to begin production of the upgraded PS5 console between the second and third quarters of this year.

The PS5, which was redesigned last year, was component only and did not go through any major external changes. It is possible for this to happen again with the CFI-1200.

Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki said last year that the company is considering several solutions to help it deal with the global shortage of hardware components, including potential design changes or seeking a secondary supplier.

Sony announced on Tuesday that it shipped 11.5 million PS5 consoles in the fiscal year ending March 2022, falling more than three million units behind the original target of 14.8 million consoles due to a lack of spare parts. However, the company said it expects to sell significantly more PS5 consoles (18 million units) in the fiscal year ending March 2023. Source
