Leidos unmanned systems engineers are developing four variants of REMUS medium-sized experimental autonomous underwater vehicles for maritime detection and mine countermeasures.

Leidos is already developing the MUUV, which combines an unmanned vehicle and sensors to provide autonomous oceanographic drilling and data collection on submarines as well as permanent surface-based mine countermeasures.

MUUV REMUS is planned to be a modular unmanned aerial vehicle with open programming and customization systems, taking into account the Navy’s next-generation Unmanned and Small Warfare Program Office (PEO USC) requirements. In addition, the software architecture of the naval unmanned aerial vehicles under development will support the PMS 406 control system and the Razorback UUV military design environment.

The Razorback design environment includes medium-sized naval drones launched from the dry deck of a submarine rather than a torpedo tube. Such autonomous mini-submarines will be modular to perform a wide variety of naval missions, from mine clearance to sea reconnaissance.

The first MUUV systems will be dedicated to reconnaissance mine countermeasures, while others will support data collection for autonomous submarine oceanographic drilling and environmental sensing and mine countermeasures. Source
