Thread numbers drop like lead

Starting threads over a month ago was one of the most successful in the history of the Internet, which will exceed the adoption rate of services as prominent as ChatGPT. In less than a week, it managed to reach and exceed 100 million users, which heralded a golden future for the new social network Meta, which was thus configured as the main threat to Twitter, which is clearly not working. through his best moments.

Let’s remember that Meta has been working at Threads for quite some time. which was originally born as an Instagram feature that allowed for the posting of small text messages, mimicking the type of content common on Twitter. Its reception was so good that the company decided to scale it to the point of separating it from Instagram to make it an independent service, although paradoxically it has been linked to Instagram accounts since day one.

From the moment we started seeing its interface, a few days before its launch, it was revealed that Threads was “inspired” by Twitter (Even its name, Threads, is what was translated into Spanish as “Threads”, one of Twitter’s most popular features). This led to Elon “free speech” Musk threatening a lawsuit, which has yet to be heard again. So the Meta was probably jumping for joy the first few days after launch.

Gradually, however, it seems that the social network failed to attract all the users who initially tried it. So as we can read on ZDNet, Thread user volume is down 79% from peak, which occurred during the first days of service. In other words, four out of five users who used the service in the early days left it in just over a month. After peaking at 49.3 million daily users on July 7, those numbers fell 79% to 10.3 million on August 7. In the United States, daily active users peaked at 2.3 million on July 7 and fell to 576,000 on August 7.

And why did it happen? Limited features, read-only access in several geographies, well-known meta policy (which we have already seen on Facebook and Instagram)… the list of possible reasons is quite long and most likely there is no single reason, but many of them that have discouraged users who decided to try it initially.
