The “Civil Revolution” movement, led by former President of Ecuador Rafael Correa (2007-2017), denounced this Monday assassination of Pedro Briones, local party leader outside the parish of San Mateo in the northern province of Esmeraldas, on the border with Colombia.

Information about the murder was made in social networks by the director Civil Revolution in Esmeraldas, Janet Bustosjust five days after presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio of the right-wing Movimiento Construye political party was assassinated by alleged Colombian hitmen as he left a rally in Quito.

“The killing bullet ended his life,” said former Esmeraldas governor Paola Cabezas, who recalled the wave of insecurity and violence that Ecuador has plunged into and that has claimed the lives of several politicians in recent months, including several members of the civil revolution.

“They killed another of our colleagues in Esmeraldas. Enough!” former President Correa also tweeted.

Before Villavicencio, other politicians and candidates were killed in a similar way, as, for example, in the case of Mayor of Manta, Agustín Intriagoand withAssembly candidate for Esmeraldas Ryder Sanchezfrom the Let’s Act alliance, led by former Vice President Otto Sonnenholzner, both occurred in July.

Murder Omar Menendez, Civil Revolution candidate for mayor of Puerto Lopez, occurred just one day after the municipal authorities’ vote on 5 February.

Civil Revolution candidate for President of Ecuador, Louise Gonzalez, He pointed out that “Ecuador is going through the bloodiest time”, blamed the current government of conservative President Guillermo Lasso and “the state captured by the mafia” for the current situation.

This killing spree is part of an increase in violence in Ecuador, which ended last year with 25.32 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in its history.

The government attributes the phenomenon to organized crime and drug trafficking, which have been especially rampant along the Ecuadorian coastline and have turned Ecuadorian ports into major cocaine shipping hubs for the United States and Latin America.
