Last week, Samsung launched a public beta program for One UI 6, the new user interface that the South Korean firm is developing about android 14. The test program was subsequently delayed, but at least it allowed us to learn about its main features.
As you know, almost all manufacturers who license Android from Google develop additional layers of software to customize their mobile devices. Some very slightly, like Motorola, which is perhaps the one that offers the purest Android, while others like Amazon are on the other side with Fire OS, which even eliminates access to Google apps and services by default.
Samsung is in the middle, giving you access to everything from Google, but offering alternatives in all areas, with its own user interface and a whole host of apps and added services. Of course, as befits and belongs to the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturer, it is the manufacturer that invests the most in the area of software.
With the release of the final version of Android 14 just around the corner, manufacturers have been advancing their own interfaces to varying degrees, and One UI 6 is one of them, and according to Samsung, it has focused on three main areas: ease of use, more efficient layout of applications and functions, and wider customization options.
Especially in the news, we know about the complete renewal of the notification display and the quick settings panel. There’s also a new default font, new emoticons, a new custom camera widget that lets you pre-select the camera mode and storage location, as well as the ability to set different lock screens based on the user’s current mode and routine.
Here is other news that is general Android 14 and that Samsung will combine in One UI 6 such things as better bloatware management (which is about time because Android, like Windows, has to give and take) and changes to passcodes with compatibility Credential manager and Access keyswhich simplifies the authentication process and improves security compared to typical passwords.
We also know about automatic switching in dual SIM systems; optimization of folding applications; scaling system text up to 200% or reserving foreground services for only the highest priority tasks.
When will it be available and for which mobiles?
Considering that the final stable version of Android 14 will be available in September, it highlights – as happened in 2022 with One UI 5 – October, when the Samsung interface was launched. As for mobiles, in this article we are publishing the list of models that will be updated with One UI 6. It is not an official list, but it will not be much different considering that Samsung supports updates of up to three previous generations. Hopefully Samsung will relaunch the beta program soon and we’ll be able to try it out.
