The PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in Far Infrared Experiment) mission will collect data on how much far-infrared energy is emitted at the poles and how these emissions change throughout the day and year. The publication writes that although almost 60% of Arctic radiation occurs at these wavelengths, far infrared radiation is a little-studied part of Earth’s energy spectrum.
The two Cubesat satellites, each the size of a loaf of bread, will be equipped with a miniature instrument called a thermal infrared spectrometer.
With two launches scheduled for May 2024, Rocket Lab will use the Electron rocket to launch satellites into orbit where they will collect data for at least 10 months.
Launches will take place from the Rocket Lab launch pad in New Zealand.
As reported by Ukrinform, Rocket Lab company launched two commercial Earth radar research satellites, Capella-9 and Capella-10, using the Electron rocket.
