At least eleven people died it’s August 15 In a shipwreck on the river Lukeni, in the center of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), after the boat in which they sailed sank after barely twenty metersinformed EFE leader of civil society.

“(The boat) was transporting officials who were on their way to the city of Kuta for training,” said Conscious Generation civil society coordinator Darius Nsai Ikwo.

The shipwreck happened just twenty meters from the port of Oshwe.from where the ship left, in the province of Mai-Ndombe.

“We have already counted eleven dead and are continuing to investigate to find out the causes of this sinking,” Ikwo said, pointing to the possible overload of the boat as the cause of the accident.

“We found out that (the boat) was carrying over 300 passengers,” he added.

Lukeni – one of the many streams from the river Congo belonging Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Congo River, which has an elevation of 1,760 meters above sea level in the northeastern region of Zambia, between lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa (Malawi), is the deepest river in the world. Its course flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

Boat sinking is common in the DRC because rivers and lakes are used daily as transportation, despite the fact that unreliable ships tend to be heavily laden and there is little to no signaling.
