Despite the launch of Bing Chat in February, Bing has yet to break Google’s dominance. Both market share and advertising revenue continue to stagnate.
We take you back to February 7th, 2023. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announces Bing Chat with great fanfare. With the chatbot’s interactive search capabilities, Bing would revolutionize the search industry. Google would face serious competition for the first time, the announcement said. However, six months later, not much has changed.
Microsoft may be proud of the fact that Bing Chat has already been used for more than a billion conversations, but Google has not been able to give the search engine even the slightest doubt. Statcounter numbers show that in six months, Bing has yet to capture a full percentage point of the undisputed king of search’s market share.
Bing was at three percent (rounded) at the end of July, the same market share it gained after the month of January without Bing Chat. Google has also remained constant at 92 percent. A status quo instead of the expected shock effect for Microsoft and Bing.
Ultimately, it’s Microsoft that makes the money, but again, Bing Chat isn’t making big changes just yet. Microsoft’s advertising revenue, of which Bing has a large share, grew 3 percent last quarter. That’s even a slower growth rate than before Bing Chat existed, notes the Wall Street Journal.
Microsoft will roll out Bing Chat more broadly in the coming months to attract more users to the search engine. The company seems to realize that exclusivity for its own Edge browser isn’t the best strategy and is making the AI functions available via other browsers as well. With Bing Chat Enterprise, Microsoft wants to convince companies that do not want their trade secrets to be revealed by ChatGPT.
