“There was a terrible wind and there was no signal, we did not have it. We decided to go to Wylie, thinking that maybe it was just a terrible storm from Hurricane Dora, which passed very close to Hawaii, ”he explained.

When they were on their way They noticed that the weather was getting worse. because while they were in the car, tree branches were falling very aggressively, poles and roofs of houses were moving, and the traffic lights were not working.

Considering the situation They thought of returning to Lahaina; However, they decided to go further. because they didn’t want to go back through the area they had traveled before.

“We got to Wylie, then closed all the roads at night because fires started and a lot of people died; people had to jump into the sea to escape the fire, because it was a very strong fire, it’s scary to think that a few days ago we were there, and now everything is destroyed,” he said.

Argüelles explained that later a fire started very close to the hotel, so they had to get out, and again they considered returning to Lahaina to collect their passports as the young woman’s parents could not travel without them to try and leave the area.

She said that some people they knew were in Lahaina and lived right next to the apartment they were staying in, so they they sent them messages to alert them to the situationbecause the section was cut off.

“There were some people we knew who were in Lahaina and thank god they were close to our Airbnb. At four in the morning, our friend’s son went and went to the mountain to catch a signal and there he understood all the messages that we sent him. He understood the situation. He called me and went to our Airbnb for passports; They managed to escape, they managed to get out, and now they are safe in Wylie,” he said.

“It was a terrible experience, very sad, very disturbing, not knowing what was going to happen, not knowing if you were making the right decision, but thank God we are all safe. We’ve lost all our stuff, but that’s the least important thing.”

Argüelles concluded his video by asking people to donate and help the people of Maui. because they really need people’s support, so he asked the people to donate as much as possible.
