Google Messages will soon let you send emergency SOS messages over a satellite link. As spotted by X (Twitter) user Neil Rahmouni and reported by Mishaal Rahman, Google has started adding UI elements for emergency SOS via satellite to the Messages app.

Rahman notes that the SOS event is only a placeholder in the program so far. This does not prove that future Pixel phones or other devices will support satellite communication. However, this shows that Google wants to embed the service in the messaging app rather than an entirely new app.

Google has already announced that Android 14 will allow smartphones to connect directly to satellites. A similar satellite link feature in modern iPhones has helped save many lives, most recently during the unfortunate wildfires in Hawaii.

Since it’s the default messaging app on most Android phones, it makes sense for Google to integrate the satellite emergency call feature into the Google Messages app. However, it’s unclear which phones will support this feature and how Google will deliver it. As Rahman pointed out in a previous post on X, satellite support in Android will depend on your device’s modem hardware. Not every device running Android 14 can support satellite connection.

Both Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 are said to have satellite hardware. However, they will require a major firmware update to enable the satellite link.
