Samsung Display’s intention to develop a frameless screen was announced at the Display Business Forum 2023 event by subsidiary director Jung Yong-Wook.

Given the state the project is in now, it seems quite unlikely that the alleged bezel-less display will make it to the next-gen Galaxy S, but its implementation in future generations of the smartphone line is an idea that should not be discarded. nor should it be that the company chooses to supply it to other manufacturers, it’s that in the end business is business.

About the screen itself, in addition to being able to provide bezel-less smartphones, the intention is to introduce a better front-facing camera below the panel to offer a seamless experience to the user. Other things you can use are 3D lamination and edge gloss control.

We’ll see if Samsung Display succeeds in bringing his idea to the end, because everything indicates that it still has all the development work ahead of it. However, we are also talking about a gigantic company that has a lot of resources, so if they have thought about developing this project, it is because they see real chances for its implementation and subsequent commercialization.

On the other hand, it is possible that in the future there will be two groups of smartphone users: those who prefer bezels and those who don’t. According to logic, the argument that the former should make is the greater durability of the device, while the latter would bet more on aesthetics. Samsung may surprise with the hardness of the devices that implement the screen it is developing, but that remains to be seen.

Despite the clear dominance of Apple among high-end smartphones and the fact that manufacturers of Chinese origin have dominated the market for low- and mid-range devices, Samsung continues to be one of the leading companies in this sector.
