Google tests ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for Chromebooks

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have long been the primary wireless technologies for connecting devices. But ultra-wideband (UWB) is becoming the next big thing, promising fast data rates. Google is currently exploring the potential for ultra-wideband (UWB) communications for Chromebooks, focusing on use cases such as connecting Chromebooks to each other, to phones, and to multiple devices at the same time.

Chrome Unboxed Recently discovered details about UWB on Chromebooks. They saw mention of UWB (Ultra Wideband) in Chromium Gerrit, a tool developers use to discuss and review changes to the source code.

Specifically, Google is currently experimenting with UWB on Chromebooks for various purposes. These experiments include testing connections between Chromebooks, connections between Chromebooks and phones, and even multi-user connections that go beyond one-to-one connections.

Broadband for Chromebooks is still in testing, so it may be a while before we see it on Chrome OS devices. But the potential of UWB on Chromebooks is exciting.

If you’re not familiar with UWB (over broadband), it’s an energy-efficient, versatile, and cost-effective short-range wireless technology. It can transfer data quickly at speeds of up to 675 Mbps and provides very accurate location tracking down to one centimeter. That’s why Apple AirTags uses UWB to reliably track lost items.

Broadband technology in Chromebooks can open up new possibilities for connections. As the blog post states, this could make wireless advanced displays a reality. This would be a huge improvement as it would eliminate the need for cables and make it easier to set up and use multiple displays.
