Roscosmos said communications with the Luna-25 were cut off at 14:57 (11:57 GMT) on Saturday. Roscosmos reported that, according to preliminary findings, the lander “disappeared after colliding with the surface of the Moon.”

“Efforts to locate and contact the ship on 19 and 20 August were unsuccessful.”

The space agency said it would launch an investigation into the cause of the crash, without giving any indication as to what technical issues may have occurred. With the Luna-25, Moscow hoped to build on the legacy of the Soviet-era lunar program, marking a return to independent lunar exploration amid growing isolation from the West.

The 800-kilogram “Luna-25” probe was supposed to make the first soft landing on the Moon’s south pole.

Russia has not attempted to land on a celestial body since 1989, when the ill-fated Soviet Phobos-2 probe to study Mars satellites failed due to a malfunction in the onboard computer.
