Soldiers of the Ukrainian Defense Forces have already started receiving Polish GROT submachine guns, which Warsaw delivered as military aid. These 5.56×45 NATO small arms are new to Poland itself. Its serial production began only in 2017, and thanks to GROT, the Polish Army plans to abandon its Soviet legacy.

GROT machine as a challenge for Poland

For Poland’s defense industry, the development of the GROT was a challenge, as it involved developing an assault rifle from scratch. Earlier, in 1997, the Poles developed and deployed the production of the wz.96 Beryl machine gun, but this was only an upgrade of the AK-74 to the NATO cartridge.

In addition, the Poles immediately set the bar for the maximum high – the new development was supposed to be better than the German HK416 and the Belgian FN SCAR-L. And these two models are not only new, but also one of the best in their class, combining reliability and efficiency.

Also, the main feature of GROT is modularity. And in a much broader sense than many other shooting systems. Almost the entire system is a constructor, in which it is possible to assemble a rifle, machine gun, assault rifle and compact gun for fighting in cities or armored teams. And all this on the field.

There is also a bullpup version of the machine that uses the same modules but has not yet been serialized.

As a result, the GROT was developed from 2007 to 2017, when it was adopted in the assault rifle version with the GROT C16 FB-M1 index. The first batch of weapons underwent an extensive research operation, during which deficiencies were identified in the weakness of plastic elements and other “children’s diseases”. This caused a relatively loud scandal of “guns”, and the manufacturer was modernized as quickly as possible. The GROT C16 FB-M2 received a longer flow to cover the gas block, reinforced drummer, modified handle and butt.

Features of the GROT C16 FB-M2 automatic machine

The GROT C16 is a classic assault rifle with an automatic piston short stroke automatic and the barrel channel locking feature when turning the shutter. Aluminum and impact-resistant plastic are widely used in the design, but the weight of the rifle without cartridges for the version with a barrel of 406 mm (16 inches) – 3.65 kg, which is approximately equal to the AK-74. Dimensions are also standard: 900 mm and 843 mm with curved buttstock.

The developers paid special attention to ergonomics. A classic for NATO countries, a three-position safety fuse selector for the thumb. A big key for me and reset for a standard NATO tank. Shutter buttons on both sides that remain stable while shooting.

Of course, there is a shutter delay, as well as easy adaptation to the shulga, because all the “controls” are duplicated and the direction of the launch of the levers changes. All sorts of beautiful “little things”, such as a regular cheek on a complex butt, a long solid RIS mount at the top and a short one on the sides of the stream – also in the basic version.

As for the range and accuracy of the GROT C16 firing, these are standard for assault rifles. The developers’ aiming range is 500 meters, the standard cluster feature – 150 mm from the average aiming point per 100 meters. Speed is also standard for NATO systems – 700-900 shots per minute.

The development of their own automatic weapons of the Poles, especially from scratch, without using the American AR platform or the work of Kalashnikov, of course, caused fierce envy in Russia.

This resulted in a series of releases that reproduced all the shortcomings identified in the first version of the GROT C16 and, of course, the “winner” was “Holy Kalash”. But the main drawback of the AK-74 and the newer AK-12 is mainly in the 5.45×39 ammunition, which is worse than NATO 5.56×45.

In the West, the vast majority of observers noted, first of all, the relevance of GROT. Our warriors, who have already received these weapons, say so. As for the features of the operation in real hostilities, reviews are likely to appear no less quickly. As for the price, in 2019 Warsaw ordered 18,000 GROT C16s for $40.2 million, which gives the cost of a machine at: 2233 dollars.
