Finnish President Sauli Niinisto stressed that much has changed since Russia’s attack on Ukraine. In other words, the country is applying to join NATO. According to Yle, he announced this decision live.
Sauli Niinisto stressed that the country’s application for membership in the Alliance was not made against anyone.
“This is a historic day. A new era is beginning. Security is not a zero-sum game. When Finland’s security is at its highest, overall security increases“- said Niinisto.
Sweden is also expected to make a decision. It is already known that the Swedish ruling party, insisting on neutrality, is ready to take a positive decision to join the Alliance. In this way, Scandinavian countries will no longer have a neutral status.
However, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey did not approve of such a decision, as Finland and Sweden were “like guesthouses for terrorist organisations.”
The President of Turkey was referring to the representatives of the Kurdistan Workers Party who took refuge in Scandinavian countries. NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg (centre) met with Finnish and Swedish Defense Ministers Antti Kaikkonen and Peter Hultqvist in Brussels
But European Truth is confident that NATO can “find the conditions for reaching a compromise”, citing Mircea Geoana, NATO Deputy Secretary General. Source
