International Business Machinery Inc. will sell its weather business to Francisco Partners, which will run it as a separate company. IBM’s consumer-focused weather services and business-focused offerings, such as Weather.com, will be acquired by a tech-focused private equity firm for an undisclosed sum, a joint statement with Francisco said on Tuesday. IBM will maintain the sustainability software suite.

“With increased investment and resources from Francisco Partners, The Weather Company will seek to go beyond mere forecasting and provide users with new tools and experiences to help them understand how weather affects all aspects of their lives, starting with health and well-being.” It is stated in the message of the companies.

IBM has been considering selling the device since at least April. The unit was acquired in a deal announced in 2015 that included the Weather Channel and Weather Underground apps and sites as part of an effort to expand its penetration into the then-hot Internet of Things market.

Since then, IBM has sought to refocus on cloud computing and sold its former infrastructure division, Kyndryl Inc. Last year, Watson Health sold part of its business to Francisco Partners for more than $1 billion. In January, IBM said it would cut about 3,900 jobs, and most of the cuts would focus on employees left after disposing of units.
