Gamescom 2023 officially starts tomorrow, but some companies like NVIDIA decided to anticipate this event and today they publish everything they had to say about the trade show. And of course, specifically in the case of the green giant, we managed to verify that they arrived at the event with a lot and a very interesting narrative, so below we will go through all the announcements, which are undoubtedly excellent news for other players
The most notable announcement is of course the DLSS 3.5 announcement, a huge development on the current iteration of NVIDIA’s upscaling technology (and more), which we’ll cover in full in this special. I understand because it is established in the market, but maybe NVIDIA should consider changing the name for DLSS, because it is no longer limited to frame scaling with artificial intelligence, it is also able to generate intermediate frames (DLSS Frame Generation) and with DLSS 3.5 use artificial intelligence for reconstruction flash. The collection of technologies grouped together in DLSS is without a doubt simply spectacular. But as I mentioned, if you want more information about its version 3.5, be sure to read the special we published about it.
Half-Life 2 RTX with NVIDIA REMIX
About a month ago you may remember there was a sign telling us that Half-Life would be present at Gamescom 2023. Of course, this immediately made us wonder what they were planning at Valve. Redone? New delivery? Alyx for PS5? The mythical saga continues to be a reference for many, so the simple fact that it was referenced was a revolution, albeit with more than familiar reasons to take it with a certain amount of calm and avoid expectations.
What we didn’t expect, although it actually makes a lot of sense, is that it was NVIDIA, and not Valve, who should have told us something new. development of Half-Life 2 RTX, the project that follows the unforgettable Portal RTX, a surprising and much celebrated update of another great Valve classic, and which, as we told you in its technical analysis, makes the most of the features of current graphics cards. Now, to be more precise, we have to say that this Half-Life 2 RTX has even more in common with Portal Prelude RTX.
The link between the two titles is NVIDIA REMIXfree platform modding integrated into NVIDIA Omniverse, which will deliver to this community, that of modders, an extensive set of tools that will make it much easier to make adjustments that bring classic games up to date, as well as spectacular design improvements for more recent titles. We saw a recent example of what can be done with REMIX recently, with the implementation of path tracking in the original 1996 Tomb Raider.
For Half-Life 2 RTX development, four teams modders are working on various aspects of the game, with Orbifold Studios leading the project. The breadth of the team and the centralized management of the project allows solving various tasks aimed at the complete reconstruction of Half-Life 2 from 2004 so that it is able to get the most out of technologies such as e.g. full ray tracing, DLSS 3, Reflex and RTX IO. In addition, and although the initial team is formed, NVIDIA invites all modders who want to participate in the project to join it through their website. Half-Life 2 RTX is still in the early stages of development, so we don’t know a release date yet, but you can already see a spectacular trailer in the game’s announcement trailer:
Xbox Game Pass on GeForce Now
One of the most exciting moments this year in terms of the gaming world came when Microsoft and NVIDIA announced that they had signed an agreement slto bring the titles of those from Redmond to GeForce Now, NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service, which meant that starting last May, we started seeing Microsoft titles on Thursdays at GFN. Of course, initially only in its Steam versions.
However, the plans went much further, as the intention was (and of course still is), integrate into NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service all titles from the Xbox Game Store and, and this is what interests us now, all titles included in Xbox Game Pass, a gaming subscription service in Redmond. This creates a very interesting formula, as the Game Pass subscription gives us a good selection of titles and the GeForce Now subscription gives us the platform to play them anywhere and with the best performance.
Since the announcement was made, there have been two big questions surrounding it. The first is which subscription titles will be playable on GeForce Now, and the second is when it will be possible. And today, NVIDIA has responded to both, and it’s good news. As for when, the answer is this Xbox Game Pass games will start arriving on GeForce Now tomorrow, August 24thin what will be one of the largest GFN Thursdays in the history of the service.
As for the next question, the plans of both tech companies could not be more ambitious, and that is the intention bring the entire catalog, both from the store and the Xbox subscription service, to GeForce Now. However, both catalogs will be added to the service gradually for logical reasons, so we’ll see how new titles are added over time.
NeMo SteerLM, an enhancement to NVIDIA ACE
Artificial Intelligence changes the gaming experience, something we could already see with scaling technologies, image generation or, as NVIDIA announced today, lightning generation. However, this is only one of the many fronts in which artificial intelligence can make a significant contribution, and what is more, in my opinion, I would say that it is not the most interesting, although of course I do not want to minimize the importance of the graphic component of the game.
Personally, I find it much more interesting what technologies like NVIDIA ACE can do. We already told you about it a few months ago when it was presented at Computex 2023 and in summary we talked about a system that will allow NPCs (Non Playable Characters, i.e. characters with whom we interact in games) can dynamically respond to the context thanks to AI.
In the model we saw at the time, the ACE workflow consisted of the following steps:
Voice input (player) to text.
Interpreting the input and preparing the response.
Text-to-speech (NPC) output.
This design was already very interesting, but today NVIDIA announced NeMo SteerLM, an improvement over the previous design that allows, as you can see in the infographic below this paragraph, adjust certain NPC parameters that will condition its response. Developers will thus be able to condition NPC reactions not only on player input, but also on the NPC’s own character.
New games with DLSS 3
Last but not least, NVIDIA also announced some of the games that will get DLSS 3 support in the coming months. Specifically, these are the advancements in this regard:
call of Duty: Modern Warfare III: DLSS 3 and NVIDIA Reflex
PAYOUTS 3: DLSS 3 and NVIDIA Reflex
Fortnite: DLSS 3
Of course, this is just a small step forward, as more announcements of other titles will no doubt follow in the coming months.
