Judge in Texas analyzes Biden’s lawsuit to remove buoys from Rio Grande

A judge in Texas analyzed the arguments of the parties in a lawsuit filed by the government of President Joe Biden against buoy barrier installed in Rio Grandeon the US-Mexico border, by ultra-conservative state governor Greg Abbott.

Judge David Ezra of the Western District of Texas held a retrial hearing while dozens activists protested near the court against measures the state government has taken to make it difficult for migrants to cross the border.

A controversial floating barrier extending some 300 meters above a border river has sparked conflict between the federal government, which asks to leaveand a state condemning the alleged “invasion” of its territory.

Lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice claims the Texas government broke the law by placing a barrier on a “navigable” river without permission federal executive body.

The state of Texas, for its part, defends the buoy installation, accusing the Biden administration of do not protect the southern border and let in “millions” of migrants and kilograms of drugs enter the country.

The barrier, the state government assured in a court filing, “eliminated” illegal border crossings by migrants on that section of the border.

For his part, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador: accused that the buoys were invading Mexican territory, Therefore, the President noted that the Governor of Texas agreed to move the barrier to the United States.

“It’s good that you’re on the mend. It would be wise to change your mind, hopefully, and understand that you have to respect us,” the president said during a morning press conference.

Is it a matter of political goals?

This claim is false, experts told EFE, because the barrier forced migrants to cross the river in sections with a stronger current, putting your life at risk.

“People don’t stop crossing the road, they avoid the buoys, they move on…and pass those parts of the river where they could be in danger of being swept away,” said Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, an immigration policy attorney with the US Immigration Board.

The situation has already given rise to consequences, since at the beginning of the month, US authorities discovered two corpses of migrants near the buoys.

According to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the region where the barrier is located is also the second largest border region with the highest number of illegal migrant crossings.

According to Adam Isaacson, a defense expert at the Washington Office for Latin America (WOLA), his installation is politically motivated: “It is designed to mobilize the Republican’s most extremist base for the 2024 election.”

The buoys are part of Operation Lone Star. a campaign launched by the Abbott government to address the migration problem in the state and to demonstrate its opposition to Biden’s policies.

The campaign is at the core of sending buses of migrants to Democratic-run cities, which received media attention last year, as well as installing accordion kilometers on the border with Mexico, among other measures.
