King of Spain follows ‘customs’ and asks NP to try to form a government

The King of Spain has decided to invite the President of the People’s Party, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, to take part in the debate on taking over as head of the national government, after a round of consultations he held this Monday and Tuesday with the seven formations of the Congress. who wanted to go to the Palacio de la Zarzuela.

For the first time, a head of state has faced a situation where two candidates are nominated for the nomination: Alberto Nunez Feijoo, who won the elections on July 23 and enjoys the strong support of 172 deputies from four parties (NP, Vox, CC and UPN) and the socialist Pedro Sanchez, who sees himself as capable of forging alliances to achieve an absolute majority. like the one that let him control the congressional table a week ago.

On Tuesday afternoon, the monarch summoned Congress President Francine Armengol to Zarzuela to announce his decision:

PRACTICE THAT WAS CUSTOMIZED

In a statement, Casa del Rey justifies its decision by saying that the NP was the party with the most votes in the 23 July general election, and that in all previous cases the investiture was entrusted to the candidate with the most seats, with the exception of the XI Legislative Assembly, when Mariano Rajoy expected refuse this task.

As they emphasize, “this practice” of ordering Winner’s investing has “become a tradition over the years” and in this round of consultations by Felipe VI, in which several would-be allies of the socialist Pedro Sánchez were unwilling to participate, “the existence of a sufficient majority for investiture has not been confirmed to date, that in his case he would have brought this custom into decline.

In any case, from Zarzuela they emphasize that if Feijoo does not win a sufficient majority for the swearing in, as indicated by the positions expressed by the various parties, “The king will consider successive proposals in the manner provided for in Article 99 of the Constitution,” and if none of them succeeds, the Cortes will be dissolved within a period of two months to call for new elections.

ARMENGOL TO WIN WITH FEIJO TO SEE POSSIBLE DATES

Having received an offer from the head of state, Armengol must now set a date for the debate, but first he will contact the nominated candidate to find out his opinion and preferences. In any case, he understands that now it is time for him to start communicating with other groups in search of support.

In his speech after the King’s audience, the PP leader has already stated that he considers it ill-advised to hold a debate on investiture next week, since he must first start a round with parliamentary groups, which will not be properly formed until next Monday, when a meeting of the Bureau of the Congress is scheduled.
