With Edge for Business, Microsoft wants to implement better segmentation between professional and private internet use.
Microsoft is introducing Edge for Business to prevent employees from using two different browsers for work and private use. This Internet browser automatically switches between personal and work sessions, each with a separate browser window. This allows companies to standardize and manage a single browser.
Each profile, whether business or personal, has a separate cache and location. User information is kept separate, and personal data may be separated from the other data that organizations sync.
Edge for Business is stable enough today for general release to managed devices. Organizations that want to install Edge for Business on unmanaged devices must start with a preview version, which can be found here.
Linked to Entra ID (Azure AD)
Any organization working with Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) automatically gets Edge for Business. A separate download is not necessary. Employees are notified of the change by a banner in Edge.
When you’re in a work profile, you’ll see an updated Edge icon in the launch bar with a toolbox next to it. All passwords, favorites and data are stored here in a separate silo to maintain the separation between work and private life.
Functionally, there is no difference between the two versions for employees. Some personal windows are automatically converted to work windows, such as when you personally browse to a Microsoft 365 web application. You can consult Bing Chat Enterprise in both versions.
Little will change for the IT team. All current settings, rules and configurations are automatically pushed to Edge for Business. Support for bi-directional switching between business and easily manageable personal browser windows will be introduced in future versions. Work is also underway on optional ways to integrate the organization’s logo into Edge.
