US intelligence is conducting an investigation into the methodology for assessing the combat capabilities of foreign troops. All because of errors in the analysis of the situation in Ukraine and Afghanistan. This was reported by CNN citing its own sources.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is said to have sent a confidential letter to the Department of National Intelligence, the Pentagon, and the CIA. The document states that the agencies underestimated the Ukrainian army in the war against Russia and overestimated the Afghan forces in the conflict with the Taliban. The methodology on which intelligence assessments are based is questioned.

According to the authors of the letter, these mistakes caused the US to delay military aid to Ukraine. It was noted that only the Intelligence and Research Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs correctly evaluated Ukraine’s capabilities.

Other intelligence services relied on data on the quantitative advantages of the Russian army in weapons, equipment and manpower. But the “will to fight”, one of the most difficult intangibles for intelligence, was not taken into account. However, it is noted that US intelligence agencies gave accurate estimates of Russia’s pre-invasion planning.
