Knowing about the disappearance of Facebook Messenger Lite, we can certainly group most of the reactions into two groups. On the one hand, we will have those who are users of this application, and on the other, those who up to this point they did not know of its existence. And it’s because, as we’ll see below, it’s a development aimed at a very specific user profile (or rather device) and that therefore went unnoticed by the rest.

As you can already deduce from the name, Facebook Messenger Lite is an application that provides access to the Facebook instant messaging service (careful, not to be confused with WhatsApp, although both belong to Meta), but in a version that is much more limited in features than the standard access client to services. So his raison d’être was provide a lightweight application for entry-level deviceswho found the standard application too heavy.

So, Facebook Messenger Lite came to Google Play in 2016 and since then it has remained available to users with smartphones with very limited features. However, and over the years, two elements have combined against him. The first is that Meta improves the Facebook Messenger client, making it more “affordable” for the entry-level. And on the other hand, the development of models in this market segment has meant that today they can routinely use a standard client.

As a result, the target removed Facebook Messenger Lite Page from Play Store and although users who have it installed can still use it, the app will stop working in less than a month, on September 18th. Meta is thus giving its current users a few weeks to switch to what is now the only app available to access the social network’s instant messaging service.

Although when talking about instant messaging services, others are most often thought of, such as WhatsApp and Telegram, the truth is that Facebook Messenger orshe took second place in the global ranking services of this type with the largest number of employees and, according to 2021 data, was the employee who shared the most messages in markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom. Which of course makes us wonder how many of these users will be affected by this measure.
