From August 25, internet giants will face new obligations, including preventing the spread of harmful content, blocking or restricting certain methods of targeting users, and sharing some internal data with regulators and relevant researchers.
Currently, the rules will only apply to the 19 largest online platforms with over 45 million users in the EU. But from mid-February next year, the law will also apply to various online platforms, regardless of their scope.
Any firm violating the new law will have to pay fines of up to 6 percent of its global turnover. In case of repeated violations of the rules, platforms could be completely banned from operating in Europe.
Two of the companies on the regulatory list (e-commerce giant Amazon and German clothing retailer Zalando) are currently contesting their participation in court.
Social networks Facebook and Instagram in Norway will be temporarily banned from tracking users online for the purpose of sending targeted ads, as reported by Ukrinform.
