Astronomers believe these jets of matter may be the source of the solar wind, a stream of charged particles (matter) that is constantly moving from the Sun throughout the Solar System.
The jets of matter, called plasma, last 20 to 100 seconds each and travel at about 360,000 kilometers per hour.
The Solar Orbiter Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI), one of ten instruments on the probe, was used to acquire images of the Sun’s south pole in March 2022.
“We were only able to detect these tiny jets of matter thanks to the unprecedented high-resolution images produced by the EUI,” said study lead author Lakshmi Pradeep Chitta, of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany.
It is stated that astronomers have been aware of the existence of the solar wind for decades. But understanding the exact nature of how and where the Sun was created has hitherto been more difficult.
Alongside the advanced instruments aboard the Solar Orbiter, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is helping unravel the Sun’s greatest mysteries.
