With Google, you can no longer just adjust all Gmail settings. Changes to filter and IMAP settings must be confirmed with 2FA.

Google is expanding the use of two-factor authentication in Gmail. To adjust some “sensitive” settings, you have to prove again that you really are. This sounds like an extra step, but should add an extra layer of security in case someone manages to compromise your account.

Which settings are affected? Google considers filters, mail forwarding to other accounts, and IMAP access to be sensitive. You create filters using the function search options in the search function and are a useful tool for tidying up your mailbox or blocking addresses. You can then view and adjust your filters via Filters and blocked addresses in the settings. If you play around with the filters, you may miss important emails or receive emails from unwanted senders.

IMAP

Why forwarding and IMAP settings are considered important is also self-explanatory. These settings ensure that e-mails end up in the right mailbox and that you can, for example, transfer your Gmail inbox to Outlook. Intruders can manipulate these settings to monitor your email traffic. You can find these settings below Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

You will soon no longer be able to edit these menus. If you or someone else makes an adjustment, an alert will appear on your registered 2FA device (see screenshot). The changes will only be saved if you have given your express consent to this.

Google has started an “emergency rollout” to make the feature available to all Gmail users as soon as possible. For personal accounts, the rollout has already started and everyone will receive it within two weeks. Workspace subscribers will have to wait until September 6 but will then be served within three days.
