FSR 3.0 debuts (finally) with FSR 3 Fluid Motion for everyone

FSR 3.0 (FidelityFX Super Resolution) has been long overdue since we remember that the new and long-awaited iteration of AMD’s intelligent upscaling system was announced at the beginning of November last year. So, as my colleague Isidro well remembered this morning when he gave a full review of what we expect from this technology… with a plus, and that is that we actually had an announcement and a list of games today. .. but we will have to wait a while for their arrival.

But what, first the data and then the analysis. So today, in connection with Gamescom 2023, AMD provided the long-awaited start to FSR 3.0thus clearing the main doubts we had about this new generation and expecting the first titles compatible with it to hit the market… which, speaking of the technology itself, turned out to be what we expected and they meet the conditions we have already imagined.

The highlight is undoubtedly the FSR 3 Fluid Motion, AMD’s technology with which the company replicates DLSS 3 Frame Generation, you know, an AI-based technology that creates intermediate frames (one for each frame created by the conventional method), working to alleviate the bottleneck effect that CPUs usually cause in many cases . However, it is important to point out that, just like DLSS 3, FSR 3 Fluid Motion analyzes the content and especially the movement of the before and after frames so that the generated frames better match the dynamics of the game. providing a smoother and tighter experience.

The big question in this regard, yes, was whether FSR 3 Fluid Motion will be compatible only with the latest generation of AMD graphics RX 7000 or yes, on the contrary, its scope will be wider and reach previous generations as well. , as in the case of FSR 2, also to graphics chips from other manufacturers, and the answer is that AMD has opened its hand again, which is very much appreciated and appreciated, since Fluid Motion will also support RDNA2 graphics cards from the RX 6000 series as well as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40, 30 and RTX 20 series. and although AMD has not confirmed this, we understand and hope that this is also true for Intel Arc GPUs.

We have doubts, yes, yesSee how this technology works, as AMD has not disclosed any information about it. And that’s important, of course, because I bet a lot of people will be wondering how well it’s able to take advantage of the dedicated AI cores of the RX 7000. And the fact is, we can imagine that it is, because the opposite would be surprising, but for now we’ll have to wait for technology to confirm it

Games with FSR 3

This is surely what most people have been waiting for, the arrival of the first titles compatible with FSR 3 and Fluid Motion, but at this point I have to tell you that what was announced is a bit lacking. To show the effects of this new technology, they chose Forspoken, a game that is questionable in several ways, as we already told you, and that yes, it probably has a lot to gain in the graphics part with these improvements. And on this point, I have to agree with my colleague Eduard Medina when he said, analyzing the present and future of triple A games, that more and more developers minimize the optimization of their titles and rely on the raw power of PC and technology. such as FSR, DLSS and XeSS.

Be that as it may, the presentation has Forspoken as the protagonist, he’s already set us on the right path, and indeed he’s one of two games that will receive an update later this fall with support for FSR 3. And yes, I mentioned two because the next confirmed title is Immortals of Aveum, released this week, which is quite demanding, which is understandable since it makes good use of the potential of Unreal Engine 5.1. Just like Forspoken isn’t out yet, it’s also getting an update sometime next fall.

Not to be left “hungry”, after confirming two titles, AMD has listed more titles as well as a list of developers it’s working with with the goal of expanding in the medium term (hopefully by the end of 2023, though it’s likely to be in 2024 ) list of games compatible with FSR 3. In this list we had the opportunity to see titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Crimson Desert, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (scheduled for 2024) and Frostpunk 2 (also 2024)among others.

“FSR Fluid Motion 3 in thousands of games”

AMD has now saved the most interesting point for last (Jobs’ One More Thing set the trend), namely that this afternoon’s short but interesting presentation practically ended with the announcement of an important change with regard to current technologies, ie. DLSS 3, FSR 2 and XeSS 1.2 which they require implementation work in every gamethese technologies, which undoubtedly means extra work for the studios, and therefore new titles compatible with them are gradually appearing.

However, as we were told in this presentation, AMD FSR 3 will make an important difference thanks to AMD Hyper-RX technology, which will arrive during the first quarter of 2024 as part of Adrenaline (in this case we will find a solution specific to AMD graphics adapters), which claims will it be possible to automatically apply Fluid Motion, the only condition? That these are DirectX 11 and DirectX12 titles. If the company’s engineering teams can get it right, AMD has undoubtedly scored a major goal.

So, we can talk about lights and shadows. Mainly in the “less good” section, we find ourselves waiting almost a year between the initial announcement of FSR 3 and the arrival of the first compatible titles on the market, two along with the undated list. On the plus side though, what we’ve seen of the technology in action is promising, the universal reach of Fluid Motion is a highlight, and certainly the ability to automatically extend the reach of FSR 3 to virtually all DirectX 11 and 12 games, if it works well, a blast.
