Surely you remember that barely a week ago, We told you that WhatsApp has just started rolling out the expected feature or more precisely, a requested and expected improvement to a very frequently used feature on the service: the ability to share high-resolution photos. This was actually a necessity, as the demand for high-quality images in recent years has grown in proportion to the quality of the cameras integrated into the phones themselves. And not only in the high-end range, the common denominator is also in the middle class, and models that stand out in this respect can also be found in the entry-level range.

We already told you, yes, that increasing the quality of the images shared via WhatsApp, even when using the high definition mode, it will not transfer the files in the same quality as the originals, but it uses some compression, although obviously less than the one used so far, which is still used if we choose to send them with the default settings. Don’t get me wrong, it seems like a significant improvement to me, but I think there is still room for improvement.

We told you in the mentioned news that the deployment of this feature has already started for images, but that Meta also had plans to expand it to videos. shared through an instant messaging service. At the time, it wasn’t clear when it was scheduled to arrive, so everyone (or at least many) thought the wait would be a while longer. But it seems we were wrong.

As confirmed by TechCrunch, WhatsApp now allows you to share HD videos in the end-user version, that is, we are not talking about a test that takes place in beta versions. Of course, and as it happened with the pictures last week. this feature is also being rolled out and Meta’s timeframe hasn’t been disclosed, but we can wait at least weeks for completion.

Now you may be wondering why I quoted high definition in the title of this news, and that’s because just like images, Meta has significantly limited the maximum resolution, which happens to be 720pi.e. HD. A limitation that is well below the capture resolution offered by current devices, with a huge number of devices offering 1080p and more and more models allowing 4K recording.

Until now, the maximum video resolution offered by WhatsApp for sending videos was 480p., which was already very, very short, but the fact is that the jump just to reach 720p seems a little short to me. We will have to wait and see if this is not just the first phase, and if Meta intends to increase the maximum resolution in the future.
