ARM specialist Qualcomm seemed best placed to develop a worthy challenger for the Apple M1 and M2, but that seems to be going less smoothly than planned.

Qualcomm is reportedly having trouble developing its own Oryon cores. The chip designer announced it in 2022. They would become the heart of the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4. Qualcomm hopes to be able to offer an alternative to Apple’s M chips with this chip.

The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 and Oryon cores were developed in-house by Qualcomm, but are based on the ARM architecture. This makes them a direct competitor to Apple’s M1 and M2. Qualcomm has introduced previous generations of ARM chips tailored for the laptop, but they’ve all been a bit disappointing.

ARM and Windows: difficult relationship

The breakthrough for Arm for Windows hasn’t really happened yet, partly because there are hardly any concrete advantages on the hardware side and the software compatibility is below average compared to the Apple ecosystem. With the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4, Qualcomm has to deliver a good chip if Windows on ARM is not to die a silent death.

It’s unclear what the exact problems are. Some time ago it turned out that a test chip with twelve cores did not perform as expected. Qualcomm would have trouble solving the underlying issues. The company acquired Nuvia in 2021 in hopes of gaining the know-how needed to build better chips for laptops.
