Sipeed expands its ecosystem for the RISC-V platform with an unusual device, an ultra-small laptop with a 7-inch screen.
RISC-V continues to expand to take a piece of the pie from the other two major hardware architectures for client devices: ARM and X86. And it’s important because it’s the most promising solution when looking for an open source processor. Born a decade ago at the University of California, Berkeley, it aims to develop a new open-source chip design that offers a cheaper way to manufacture semiconductors. more open, free and without paying license fees.
As a member of RISC-V International, an international alliance that collectively develops processors using the RISC-V architecture, Sipeed distributed a unique Raspberry-style Lichee board a few months ago.

Now, on this basis, he brings us a mini-laptop with 7-inch capacitive touch screen and a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It has an aluminum chassis weighing 650 grams, a 72-key keyboard and a “RedPoint” device that mimics Lenovo’s “TrackPoint” pointing device.

Like other solutions from the Lichee family, this small notebook is powered by the LM4A module, which includes a processor, memory and integrated storage. The processor is an Alibaba TH1520 chip with four XuanTie C910 RISC-V cores and a speed of up to 1.85 GHz, which can perform 4 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of AI performance.

The version installed on the laptop has 16 GB of LPDDR4X memory and 128 GB of eMMC storage. There is an M.2 slot that can be used to add faster, higher capacity SSDs. It is compatible with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5, has a 3000 mAh/7.6 V battery and the following ports:
- 1 USB 3.0 Type-C
- 1 USB 3.0 type A
- 1 USB 2.0 type A
- 1 mini-HDMI
- 1 microSD card reader
- 1 3.5 mm audio jack

Lichee Console 4A can run operating systems Based on Linux, including Debian and PolyOS, and is compatible with VSCode. Sipeed is positioning the netbook as a device for developers, hackers, enthusiasts and early adopters of RISC-V, an architecture that is still very much “green” but shows promise as an alternative hardware architecture. It is expected to be priced around $300 with sales from its website or retailers such as Alibaba.
