Microsoft has quietly removed the OneDrive unlimited storage formula from its offering. Dropbox ruled the same thing a few days ago for being abused.

If you browse through Microsoft’s cloud storage offerings, you will find that there is now only a separate OneDrive for Business plan on offer. For EUR 4.70 per month you get 1 TB of storage space in OneDrive per user, which can be expanded to 5 TB. Not long ago, Microsoft also offered a second OneDrive formula with unlimited storage for just ten euros a month.

Microsoft has quietly removed this from its website as this must have happened in the second half of July according to TechRadar. Microsoft does not give a clear reason for this decision. The vague statement sounds as if “at the request of customers, the purchase process for individual OneDrive subscriptions has been reorganized”. Existing customers can keep the subscription.

The term “unlimited storage” should be used with caution. This package also included 1 TB per connected user by default. Under certain conditions, companies could apply to Microsoft for an increase to 25 TB per user. In Microsoft 365 plans, 1 TB per user is the default option.

It is no coincidence that this news is leaking now, because just a few days ago Dropbox decided to stop offering unlimited storage. Dropbox found that companies and individuals were in cahoots and sharing storage capacity. That’s not the intention and so the fun is over. We cannot say whether this was also the motivation for Microsoft.

Only a few providers in the cloud market dare to promise unlimited storage space. Google also sets a hard storage limit of 5TB for the most expensive plans and 30GB for the cheapest Workspace plan. Formulas with unlimited storage can still be found at niche providers like Sync.com, Box, and Backblaze. It’s always a good idea to read the fine print before subscribing.
