The aircraft, which will be launched from Cape Canaveral (Florida), will overcome 2.6 billion kilometers (1.8 billion miles) to reach the Jupiter system, which it will reach in 2030.

“Because it orbits Jupiter and flies over Europa about 50 times, it will fly another 800,000 kilometers while its scientific instruments collect data on the underground ocean, ice crust and atmosphere of the Moon,” the statement said.

The Europa Clipper mission and the “collected names” will travel billions of kilometers as the spacecraft “explore whether the ocean, believed to lie beneath Europa’s icy crust, could support life.”
