This was stated by Israel21c professor Roe Diamant, according to Ukrinform.
“We have developed a robot that uses active sonar to detect fish and estimate their size and biomass, which is important for understanding the number of fish in the sea,” he said.
According to him, today fishermen often cast nets where they think fish may be found, or drag these nets behind the boat.
“In addition to many fish that are not important to them, they also catch sea turtles, sometimes dolphins and small fish that are not allowed to be caught. The harm that these methods cause to the environment is very important. If they had the technology to say, “You’re looking for tuna, this is where you have to check,” the fisherman could act more sustainably for the marine system, Diamant explained.
It is said that these floating underwater robots can change their position autonomously depending on the currents and can control their depths and change their volume by moving up and down in the water. Its acoustic sensors absorb reflections from everything from the seafloor to fish.
Each robot can work continuously for five days. It then returns and the operator can track it via GPS and retrieve it from the water.
A device costs $1,000.
As Ukrinform reports, researchers from the University of California, San Diego (USA) have created a robot whose front “limbs” resemble turtle fins.
