Fairphone is introducing its latest smartphone today. The Fairphone 5 has to break all support records and provide updates for eight to possibly ten years.
The Fairphone has now reached the fifth generation. The Dutch company of the same name is sticking to its schedule of launching a new model every two years and today is the time to launch the Fairphone 5. Not much has changed in the recipe since the first generation: Fairphone still wants you to enjoy your smartphone for a long time. With a little luck, you can use this smartphone until 2033.
One of the unique features of a Fairphone is that you can repair it yourself. The back can be easily clicked off and parts such as the battery are interchangeable. The company also includes ten spare parts for the Fairphone 5. Both the main camera and the wide-angle lens are available as separate modules, as are the SIM and SD ports with a five-year guarantee.

Eight to ten years of updates
But Fairphone promises a longer lifespan than those five years. When the Fairphone 4 launched in 2021, five years of software support was pretty unique on the market. Other manufacturers such as Samsung now also offer this, so Fairphone has to go one step further in order to differentiate itself. The device ships with Android 13 and promises five major software updates.
That alone should keep your smartphone running for years to come. But with the security updates, Fairphone wants to hang on for a few more years. While most smartphone manufacturers will drop their devices they will launch this year by 2028 at the latest, Fairphone wants to support its latest model until 2031 or even 2033. To illustrate: the moment the Fairphone 5 would finally give up the ghost, the iPhone 25 hit the shelves.
At Fairphone, you shouldn’t be knocking on the biggest specs. The OLED screen has a 90Hz refresh rate, with even the average budget smartphone already typing at 120Hz today. The removable battery has a capacity of 4200mAh and can be “fast-charged” at 30W, according to the press release, although that claim is more of a marketing ploy. In addition, the device has a 50 MP three-piece camera system, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB storage (expandable to 2 TB) and a Qualcomm QCM6490 chipset.
Prices and Availability
The Fairphone 5 is available today for EUR 699 including VAT. You can choose from three colors: black, blue or transparent. If you prefer the variant with the “Google-less” operating system e/os, you pay 769.90 euros.
