This year, the PC market will again shrink sharply, but IDC predicts light at the end of the tunnel. 2024 is likely to be a year of growth, but the analysts are not expecting too much either.
In 2023, the entire PC market is expected to shrink by 13.7 percent compared to the previous year. That’s what IDC predicts. The total number of devices shipped would be 252 million. These numbers are not surprising: the downward trend has been very clear since the end of the corona pandemic. Economic uncertainty and a spending spree during the pandemic itself are at the root of the decline.
In the next year the market will slowly stabilize. IDC expects growth to pick up again in 2024, although growth will remain modest and even below pre-pandemic levels. Specifically, the analysts are assuming that sales will increase by around 3.7 percent to 259.6 million computers next year.

According to IDC, AI is a driver, but other factors also play a role. The end of official support for Windows 10 is scheduled for 2025. Due to the (artificially) high system requirements of Windows 11, the options are limited for many users. If a software upgrade doesn’t work, a hardware upgrade is the only option to stay on the safe side. IDC anticipates that this reality will significantly increase computer sales.
