WhatsApp finally has its own application for macOS. It supports group calls and the drag-and-drop features of the operating system.

macOS users have been waiting for it for a long time, but now the new WhatsApp app for Mac is finally available. For the time being, the app can only be downloaded directly from the WhatsApp website, but will soon be available via the App Store for macOS as well. The Windows desktop version has been available since the end of 2021 and received a real makeover in March.

The macOS inherits most of the features of the updated Windows app, such as video group calls and end-to-end encryption of conversations. The desktop apps allow you to have eight people on a video call, and audio calls are capped at 32 people. The cross-platform experience gets much better with the addition of a Mac app, which is gradually making WhatsApp a strong competitor to Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

But there are also nice advantages for macOS. According to WhatsApp, the application has been completely redesigned to take full advantage of the capabilities of the operating system. For example, WhatsApp on macOS also supports drag-and-drop functionality to easily add attachments to your messages.

There are some technical conditions. For example, your device must run at least macOS 11 Big Sur and the WhatsApp client will only work if you have a Mac or Macbook with Apple M chip, first or second generation makes no difference. Anyone who owns an older model with an Intel chip is still dependent on the web version in order to be able to use WhatsApp on the Mac.
