With a new AI-driven migration service for PostgreSQL, Google is happy to support companies that want to move away from Oracle’s databases. Ideally, they then switch to AlloyDB.

The announcement came during the Next conference, Google Cloud’s annual high mass. The cloud provider has new features for its Database Migration Service that facilitate the transition from Oracle database to PostgreSQL, an open-source database management system. Companies take this step to get rid of outdated databases.

Google puts Duet AI at the helm of the PostgreSQL ferry service. Duet AI is the new artificial co-pilot, although Google will hate to use that word in the Google Cloud ecosystem. The AI Assistant is built into Workspace apps, but can also help with security, data management, and more.

According to Google, Duet AI can help bridge the last but most difficult phase of the migration process more smoothly, where “traditional methods” don’t cut it. The AI tool converts legacy Oracle code into languages that support PostgreSQL, but also transfers functions and triggers to the new database.

Of course, Google doesn’t start this service just like that. The migration to PostgreSQL ideally serves as a stepping stone to AlloyDB, Google Cloud’s database platform built on and compatible with the open source platform. AlloyDB can also expect a DuetAI upgrade. AlloyDB Omni, the version that can also be run on-premises, will be more widely available.
