Nokia, together with Sydney University of Technology (UTS), has announced that it has successfully launched the world’s first microbrewery that uses cloud digital replication technology and private 5G networks to make a sparkling beverage. The unique foundation is part of the UTS Industry 4.0 research site.
The peculiarity of the new production site is that the developers have created a digital copy of a real German brewery at the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany. 5G connectivity is used to receive information from sensors, records and control of every stage of beverage production. Data from the Dortmund brewery and its digital counterpart in the cloud are used to optimize the brewing process.
The 5G network for the UTS Tech Lab is part of the Nokia 5G Futures Lab project, which was launched in November 2021 and is currently used to support other initiatives supported by the Australian government under the joint Nokia/UTS 5G Connected Cobots project. Dedicated network infrastructure includes Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway, Nokia Digital Automation Cloud 5G and Nokia AirScale Indoor Radio (ASiR).
According to a Nokia representative, Industry 4.0 is the optimal environment for developing and testing new 5G applications. The digital microbrewery demonstrates the capabilities of private 5G networks and cloud technologies to help optimize the brewing process. Source
