X (formerly Twitter) is reversing a 2019 ban on paid political advertising under then-CEO Jack Dorsey.

As reported by Ukrinform, TechCrunch reports this.

Four years ago, the company defined banned content as “mentioning a candidate, political party, elected or appointed official, election, referendum, vote, legislation, regulation, directive, or the result of a judicial process.”

The ban also covered a wide range of content, including any advertisements calling for votes, soliciting financial support, and supporting or opposing any of the listed types of political content.

X said it would allow political ads as part of efforts to “support freedom of expression”.

Elon Musk’s company has announced that it will continue to enforce special rules on paid political ads in the US. In particular, the rules will apply to advertising false or misleading content, as well as false or misleading information “aimed to undermine public confidence in elections.”

The platform will also host a global advertising transparency center accessible to anyone who wishes to view political posts advertised on X. A similar feature was already offered by Meta.

It was stated that the platform will have a “robust” review process to ensure that only relevant groups and campaigns are advertised, but no details were provided.

As reported, Company X (formerly Twitter) remains unprofitable due to falling ad revenue and heavy debt burdens.
